You need to do chip and PIN transaction your first time

When making your first purchase, cardholders simply insert the card into the merchant's point of sale (POS) terminal, so that the microchip can be read by the machine. The POS terminal then prompts them to enter their PIN, in order to authorise the transaction. This process activates your card and allows you the flexibility thereafter to use your card and pay by contactless or chip and PIN.
